Cataract Subspecialty

Education

SNEC regularly organises cataract surgery teaching courses for local and overseas eye doctors, such as the well-received annual Basic and Advanced Ophthalmic Microsurgical Workshop, the Basic and Advanced Phacoemulsification Workshops which include a live surgery segment, and the Essentials of Intraocular Lenses and Phaco-emulsification Course held at our centre.

Since 2012, we have also introduced the Intermediate Phacoemulsification Workshop targeting ophthalmologists who wish to handle more complicated cataract cases but are not doing cataract at a subspecialty level.

We also conduct monthly cataract video journal sessions open to residents and faculty which focus on discussion and teaching on finer points in cataract surgery technique for difficult cases e.g. white cataract, brunescent cataract, posterior polar cataract, tips for managing posterior capsule rupture and avoiding vitreous loss, inserting capsular bag devices and techniques of anterior vitrectomy.

We have a permanent, dedicated on-site wetlab for cataract surgery training.  Our centre continues to train international fellows from countries as far away as China, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Cataract Subspecialty Department members have been actively participating in international meetings such as those of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), and the Asia-Pacific Association of Ophthalmologists and other regional and local meetings, where they run training courses and conduct ‘live’ surgeries for a wider audience.
