The SNEC Professorship in Clinical Education in Ophthalmology

The SNEC Professorship in Clinical Education in Ophthalmology has been conferred on Professor Chee Soon Phaik. Professor Chee is a Senior Consultant of the Ocular Inflammation and Immunology Department and the Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology Department at SNEC.

Professor Chee is a pioneering senior clinician, academic ophthalmologist, and a “teaching legend” who has taught almost every single ophthalmologist in SNEC over the past three decades. She is widely considered and consistently nominated as one of the ‘best teachers’ of cataract surgery, the most common surgical procedure done globally.

Professor Chee’s students include distinguished international alumni, many of whom are now Professors and Chairs of their own departments and Directors of their institutes. She has trained more than 20 international fellows from 12 different countries as well as several local fellows in the field of Uveitis; and numerous international and local fellows in Complex Cataracts. She is one of the main cataract surgery trainers in Singapore, having trained most of the current Ophthalmologists at SNEC in the area of complicated cataract surgery.

Professor Chee has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers, with most published in the top tier Ophthalmology journals. She also has a superb record of authoring books, having published several books as Lead Author and Editor. She was the Editor for Emerging Infectious Uveitis published by Springer in 2017. She has also co-authored multiple book chapters and has been awarded Best Editor / Reviewer by International Ophthalmology in 2007 and 2009.

Since 2013, she has been the President of the Asia-Pacific Intraocular Inflammation Study Group (APIISG), a member of the International Uveitis Study Group and an International Council member of the International Ocular Inflammation Society (IOIS). She has published extensively on Cytomegalovirus infection of the anterior segment in the immunocompetent, Ocular Tuberculosis, Dengue Maculopathy and Vogt-Koyanagi Harada disease.

Professor Chee is a highly sought after speaker at numerous international, regional and national conferences and has given more than 200 invited speaking presentations on Uveitis and Cataract. She is regularly invited to conduct teaching courses, including performing ‘live surgery’ in different countries in recognition of her skills as a surgeon. She takes on the role of Course Director and Instructor for many courses locally and internationally and she has been widely recognised as an outstanding Instructor.

The conferment of this Distinguished Professorship is an endorsement of Professor Chee’s outstanding track record in leadership, clinical teaching and academic ophthalmology over three decades. It will enhance the efforts of the EYE ACP, SNEC and SERI to pave the way towards nurturing and supporting Ophthalmologists, Researchers and other eye care professionals and support staff with the relevant resources to assist them in their teaching and mentorship roles. It will further lead to the establishment of fellowships and postgraduate teaching and mentoring programmes.
