Paediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus

Synonym(s):

The Paediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus Department is led by Associate Professor Audrey Chia. Running daily clinics at SNEC and KK Women's and Children's Hospital, the Paediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus Department plays a key role in managing many childhood eye disorders including amblyopia (lazy eye), myopia, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), retinoblastoma, cataracts, genetic inherited diseases, child and adult strabismus.

Our Care Services

The department also manages complex inherited and acquired children's eye conditions, supported by other departments at SNEC. It conducts a wide range of visual investigations including fundal imaging, electrophysiology, and genetic testing.

In 2024, it set up the paediatric ocular genetics clinic. It also manages complex inherited and acquired conditions, supported by other subspecialties at SNEC, such as corneal and external eye disease, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastic, and medical and surgical retina. Visual electrophysiological tests are conducted to identify children with poor vision, diagnose genetic eye conditions and monitor children who are on medications potentially toxic to the eye.

Why Choose SNEC?

Quality Assurance

  • Introduced the children's electrophysiology service which assesses the function of the retina, optic nerve and visual pathway.
  • Conducts ROP screening in about 250 premature infants across hospitals in Singapore per year.
  • Performs electroretinograms and visual evoked potential tests for about 60 children every year.
  • Treated over 1,300 patients with atropine 0.01% eye drops to reduce the progression of childhood myopia since November 2013.

Advanced Technology

  • Launched digital screening for premature children in 2023 which provides more accurate monitoring of retinopathy of prematurity and introduced radioactive plaques to provide greater options to treat childhood ocular tumours such as retinoblastoma.

Training the Experts

  • Trained more than 25 local and international paediatric fellows from Asia, Middle-East and South America. The department provides training for ophthalmologists in Singapore, as well as an advanced fellowship programme for local and overseas ophthalmologists regionally and internationally.
