From its humble beginnings, the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC)’s Optometry Service has grown into a dynamic team of over 60 optometrists who play an essential role in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered eye care. Optometrists at SNEC play a key role in assessing, managing and optimising vision for patients across all ages — aiding them through tailored optical solutions, prescription glasses, contact lenses, and low vision aids. 

Our Journey of Growth and Excellence 

Since 1990, SNEC optometrists have been advancing clinical care and education in Singapore. Over the years, they have expanded their clinical expertise and practice scope through specialised services, patient-centred initiatives and collaboration across departments. Today, they continue to support nationwide eye health initiatives through community eye screenings, school talks and outreach programmes that raise awareness of myopia and general eye health.

Team-Based and Optometrist-Led Care 

SNEC embraces a team-based model of care where a team of advanced-trained optometrists serve as physician extenders – supporting ophthalmologists in patient assessment, clinical decision-making and follow-up management. Our optometrists also lead specialised clinics and contribute to multidisciplinary care pathways that enhance accessibility to timely eye care. 

This extended scope of practice reflects SNEC’s commitment to empowering optometrists to practise at the top of their licence — managing complex clinical cases, supporting research, and contributing to the development of new models of care. Beyond clinical service, SNEC optometrists are actively involved in education and professional development. SNEC conducts teaching courses for allied health professionals, with optometrists frequently delivering lectures, workshops and presentations both locally and abroad. They also participate in international conferences, overseas eye screenings and collaborative clinics alongside SNEC doctors, sharing knowledge and expertise that advance eye care globally.
