Neuro-ophthalmology

The Neuro-Ophthalmology department comprises an experienced team of neuro-ophthalmologists, a neurologist, a neurosurgeon and a neuro-orthoptist.

As the national and regional referral centre for challenging neuro-ophthalmic conditions, the department receives cases from NNI, SGH, the private healthcare sector including primary care physicians as well as the region. Its services are supported by advanced diagnostic tools such as optical coherence tomography, visual electrophysiology, genetic testing and neuroradiology expertise from SGH. In collaboration with SERI and Duke-NUS, the department continues to advance research and innovation in neuro-ophthalmic care. 

Our Care Services

The department provides expert diagnosis and management of conditions bridging neurology, neurosurgery and ophthalmology. These include optic neuropathies, visual pathway disorders, ocular myasthenia gravis, eye movement disorders and eyelid or facial spasms. 

Patients may present with symptoms such as acute or chronic visual loss, double vision, drooping eyelids, abnormal pupils and eyelid or facial spasms.

• Neuro-Genetic Clinic provides diagnosis and holistic management of patients and families with hereditary neuro-ophthalmic conditions.
• Eye Movement Disorder Clinic provides diagnosis and management of patients with nystagmus and other complex eye movement disorders.

Introduced key research efforts, including the Brain and Optic Nerve Study with Artificial Intelligence (BONSAI) Study which develops AI tools to screen for papilloedema and other critical conditions and the Asian Optic Neuritis Study which is a prospective optic neuritis study in Asia, conducted with national and regional partners to highlight differences from Western populations.
