Contrast Sensitivity and Glare

Contrast sensitivity refers to the ability to distinguish between an object against its background. People with low vision may have poor contrast sensitivity and issues with glare which affects their visual function and performance in daily tasks.

People with reduced contrast sensitivity and glare issues may report the following:

• Difficulty with vision at night and/or foggy conditions
• Images appear washed out
• Difficulty distinguishing steps or kerbs
• Difficulty reading newspapers
• Unable to identify food on their plate

What can be done?

• Ensure appropriate lighting conditions
• Use of high contrast colours to label commonly used items
• Accessibility functions on smart devices: bold text, reverse contrast.
• Appropriate filters for outdoor glare
