Celebrating SG Women

In the Year of Celebrating SG Women, we present stories which showcase and celebrate women’s multi-faceted contributions and progress at SNEC and SERI.

Join us to honour and acknowledge our team of amazing women who have made impact in the field of Ophthalmology, inspiring those around them with their brand of ethos in life.

What excites you about your job?
The opportunity for me to participate as one of the lead basic scientists in an international multi-disciplinary glaucoma research team at SERI has been an absolutely enriching experience. It has been a learning journey, being able to make new glaucoma discoveries while working with well-known clinicians, fellow scientists and young people along the way.

What are some of your biggest achievements till date?
Through these years of glaucoma research, I have been able to contribute towards producing high-quality research articles, and also assisted in obtaining multiple national-level grants and industry monies to support our glaucoma research effort. As one of the senior faculty members in SERI, I am also involved in the Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Academic Clinical Programme (EYE-ACP) Professional Development Committee (PDC) to groom the next generation of junior scientists and clinicians by ensuring a productive and mutually beneficial environment between researchers and clinicians.

What do we need to work on to encourage more women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)?
We need to create an inclusive environment that offers a stronger sense of belonging for women in STEM, one that allows them to manage the multiple roles they play in the workplace, family and society.

What message do you have for young girls and women interested to pursue a STEM career?
Firstly, I would encourage them to seek a supportive mentor to work with. Secondly, to choose projects that they can be passionate about and to always keep their inquisitive hats on. Lastly, try to think out of the box and stay optimistic while dealing with issues or challenges while going through different stages of training or career.
