Professor Crowston is a Clinician Scientist, with clinical practice focusing on glaucoma and research interests in glaucoma, ageing and neuroprotection. He was formerly Head of Ophthalmology at Melbourne University and Director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia from 2009 to 2018. He gained his ophthalmology training at Moorfields Eye Hospital London and a PhD at University College London. He has published 200 manuscripts and awarded over S$20 million  in research funding. 

He has received numerous awards including most recently, the ARVO Silver Fellows Award, American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award in 2018, World Glaucoma Association (WGA)-Special Recognition Award in  2017, inaugural recipient of the David L Epstein Award, ARVO in 2017 and the Peter Watson Medal by Cambridge Ophthalmology Society in 2016.

Professor Crowston is the Associate Editor of TVST (Translational Vision Science) and a member of the Editorial Boards of Current Eye Research and the International Glaucoma Review. He served as the President of the Australia New Zealand Glaucoma Society and holds Honorary Professorships at the Harbin Medical University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He founded Oculo, a company that facilitates collaborative patient care, and serves as a medical advisor to a number of start-up and biotechnology companies.
