Profile

Associate Professor Danny Cheung is a Senior Consultant ophthalmologist with the Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Surgical Retina Departments at the Singapore National Eye Centre. He specialises in the management of cataract as well as both medical and surgical retinal conditions. He is also a Senior Faculty and Associate Professor with the SingHealth Duke-NUS Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Academic Clinical Program.

Associate Professor Cheung completed his undergraduate medical degree from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 2004, and subsequently obtained his postgraduate degree for Doctor of Medicine (Ophthalmology) from the same university. He was trained as a general ophthalmologist at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, and received his Australian Specialist qualification in 2013. In addition, he completed four years of subspecialty fellowships in retinal diseases, including two years in Hong Kong and the other two at the Singapore National Eye Centre.

Associate Professor Cheung is also a clinician-scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Institute, with strong interests in retinal research and an excellent academic track record in the fields of ophthalmic epidemiology, retinal imaging, diabetic retinopathy and surgical retinal diseases. He has published over 130 scientific papers and several book chapters. These include articles in prestigious high-impact journals such as the Lancet, British Medical Journal, Diabetes Care, Brain, Annals of Neurology, and Progress in Retinal and Eye Research. His publications are well cited, with a personal H-index of 46. He is currently a leading investigator for a number of major eye studies in Singapore, including clinical trials on neuroprotective therapy for retinal detachment, and surgical management for epiretinal membrane (macular pucker). He is also involved in clinical and laboratory studies on novel therapeutic targets for other common sight-threatening retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and retinal vein occlusion. His research work has received national and international recognitions with several prestigious awards, such as the Australian Society for Medical Research High Commendation, Bayer’s Global Ophthalmology Award, Diabetes Research Innovation Award, and the National Medical Research Council Clinician-Scientist Award and the SingHealth Outstanding Research Award in Singapore.

Associate Professor Cheung highly values quality in patient care, education and research. As an experienced cataract surgeon, he performs regular and complex cataract surgeries, offering intraocular lens implants such as multi-focal and toric lenses to suit patient’s specific visual needs. As an experienced retinal surgeon, he also treats many patients with retinal diseases, including macular pucker (epiretinal membrane), macular hole, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. He truly cherishes his time with all his patients and considers a real privilege to be able to provide them with patient-centred and evidence-based eye care in a compassionate manner. Lastly, Associate Professor Cheung also devotes considerable time and passion in conducting translational eye research that aims to bring new scientific discoveries to clinical application, with an ultimate goal to improve treatment and outcome of many sight-threatening eye diseases.
