Retina Centre

The SNEC Retina Centre was set up in 2015 to manage vitreo-retinal disorders, with a focus on diabetic retinopathy and its complications.

Staffed by specialists from the medical retina and surgical retina departments, it prides itself in providing an integrated and multidisciplinary service with the latest diagnostics equipment, therapies and surgery to deliver the best possible clinical outcomes.

The SNEC Retina Centre, located in the Diabetes & Metabolism Centre (DMC) at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), offers the following services:

Diabetic Retinopathy Service (DRS)

It is recommended that all diabetics in Singapore have at least an annual fundus photographic screening. This is usually done in the outpatient polyclinics and read by the team of trained readers at Singapore Integrated Diabetic Retinopathy Programme (SiDRP). Once any abnormality is detected, these patients are referred to the DRS for further management. There is at least one clinic running every day.

Surgical Retina

The Surgical Retina team manages common conditions such as retinal tears and detachments, macular holes, macular puckers, vitreomacular traction daily. They are also able to manage complex cases such as giant retinal tears, retinal complications of myopia (e.g. macula schisis), tractional diabetic retinopathy as well as proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

The team is experienced in complex cases that require co-management with other subspecialty teams such as the cornea team. This is useful to resolve paediatric retinal issues or trauma cases that may need temporary keratoprosthesis.

Medical Retina

The Medical Retina team manages conditions affecting the retina that are not amenable to surgical treatment. These include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), retinal vascular disorders and other pathologies such as central serous chorioretinopathy.

There is also a heredofamilial retinal dystrophies clinic to care for patients with genetic diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. This is supported by the Electrophysiology Service as well as the Low Vision and Visual Rehabilitation Service.

Ophthalmic Imaging

Our award-winning imaging specialists are adept at performing retinal colour and autofluorescence photography, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography as well as optical coherence tomography (OCT).

We have state-of-the-art imaging equipment such as Heidelberg Angiography system (HRA) and Spectralis OCT, Topcon fundus imaging system and the Swept-Source OCT the Triton.
