Surgical Retina

The Surgical Retina Department at SNEC has a long history of offering complex retina surgery procedures and treatments in Singapore and is led by Associate Professor Gavin Tan. It treats eye conditions including retinal tears and detachments, advanced diabetic eye disease, myopic tractional maculopathy, vitreomacular interface disorders, complex ocular trauma and proliferative vitreoretinopathies.

Conditions such as retinal tears and detachments, advanced diabetic eye disease (including vitreous haemorrhage, retinal detachment (RD) and advanced fibroproliferative diabetic retinopathy, giant retinal tears (GRT), macular holes, macular puckers, vitreomacular traction, myopic foveoschisis, traumas and proliferative vitreoretinopathies (PVR)).

Above 98% success in retina detachment surgeries with track record of surgical techniques and technology including intraoperative OCT, macular buckle, endoscopic vitrectomy.
Vitrectomy for diabetic eye disease accounts for a fair proportion of the department's cases, including vitreous haemorrhage (39%) and traction RD (43%). From the clinicians' experience, up to 91% of patients with traction RD achieve recovery of anatomy and vision.

Surgical tools commonly used in the department include intraoperative lasers, microsurgical wide-field viewing equipment, various intraocular and post-operative tamponade agents, including heavy liquids, silicone oil and gases such as perfluoropropane.

Comprises a faculty of global experts in retina surgery who are regularly invited to surgical presentations at international meetings like Euretina, ASRS, APVRS and APAO. The department has trained more than 30 fellows in retina surgery across the world.
