Undergraduate Student Ophthalmology Posting

SNEC is a major training ground for undergraduate medical students from NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Medical School, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, in the field of Ophthalmology.

The undergraduate programme in SNEC has been carefully curated to provide students with a well-rounded experience in the field of Ophthalmology.

The 2-week programme comprises of the following components:

Clinic Attachment
Operating Theatre Attachment
Interactive Tutorials
Microsurgical Workshop Tutorial
[Optional] On-call experience

Clinic Attachment

Students will be given the opportunity to observe various acute and common eye cases in the general eye clinics within SNEC. Opportunities to observe the different subspecialty clinics are also to be expected during their attachment period.

During the 2 weeks, students will be attached to the various different clinics for 1-on-1 teaching and they will be given ample number of opportunities to participate in patient examinations and patient management with our friendly clinical tutors.

Operating Theatre Attachment

An Ophthalmology posting will not be complete without getting the opportunity to observe eye surgeries being performed ‘live’ in our operating theatres. Students will be scheduled a session in the Operating Theatres to observe cataract and other complex Ophthalmic surgeries.

Interactive tutorials

To better equip students before they attend clinics, OSCE type tutorials will be arranged for the students in the programme. Tutorial topics includes: Fundoscopy workshop, Visual Acuity Training hosted by Optometrists, Surgical video teaching, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, Paediatric and Adult Strabismus.

Microsurgical Workshop (Selected periods only)

Before experiencing the intricate procedures within the Operating theatres, students can experience suturing under the microscopes. During the session, students will be able to get direct feedback from the tutors. Within the same session, students will also be given a chance to try operating the slit lamp, and this would prepare them for their clinical attachments.

Optional on call experience

Students may opt for an on-call opportunity to be attached to our friendly doctors during their attachment program. During the session, students may get a chance to observe various emergency and possible sight or life-threatening cases in real time.

SNEC welcomes all medical students from NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Medical School, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine to apply for your elective programme with us.

We offer the following elective programme for all medical students who have a keen interest in Ophthalmology:

2-Week Clinical Posting (SNEC)
Scholarly Research Project (SERI) - Duration dependent on project
2-Week Clinical Posting (SNEC) and Scholarly Research Project (SERI)

Please note that slots for the elective programme are limited and subject to availability.

Foreign Student Electives

For all foreign undergraduates who are interested in a clinical elective programme with SNEC, please note that registration must be completed and submitted through NUS Medical Elective portal.

Please note that all registrations must be completed 6 months prior to the date of programme commencement. All slots are on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to availability.
