The SNEC Paediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus Fellowship programme provides a one-year training of clinical, surgical and research work in the subspecialty at an advanced level to produce a competent specialist in the diagnosis and management of patients of this discipline.
The fellow in Paediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus subspecialty will spend time with the supervisors in their subspecialty clinics at SNEC and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) as well as see and manage patients under supervision. There will also be opportunity to spend time in the orthoptic clinic, electrophysiological lab, contact lens clinic and other departments in SNEC, where relevant
The fellow will be taught to diagnose and screen for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in the neonatal nurseries and have experience in treating and follow up of the condition
The fellow will learn to examine, diagnose, treat and manage the various aspects of the subspecialty
In the clinic, the fellow will observe preoperative counselling, in particular he/she will be attached to a senior staff in the operating theatre to observe, assist and perform surgical procedures under supervision
The fellow should review the patients before and after each operation, as well as follow-up in the clinic
He/she will be taught how to manage possible surgical complications
Educational / Research ExposureFellows are required to participate in clinical rounds and daily ward reviews, journal clubs/teaching programmes, retrospective and prospective clinical research and quality assurance audit programmes of the department. All fellows will also participate in teaching of residents and/or medical students and attend all SNEC meetings.
