Dr Evan Wong completed medical school at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 2010. He underwent Ophthalmology training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) from 2017-2020 and won a RANZCO Trevalyn-Smith Travelling Scholarship to pursue subspecialty training in Corneal & External Eye Disease at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) from 2021-2022. During this period, he was also a Research Fellow at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) in the Tissue Engineering and Cell Therapy, as well as the Cornea and Refractive Groups.
Dr Wong later returned to Perth, Western Australia, where he worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Perth Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. During this time, he was also involved in private practice as a Corneal, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon at the Lions Eye Institute and Lions Laser Vision clinics. In addition, he participated in outreach work, contributing to surgical trips to rural communities in Western Australia through Lions Outback Vision.
Dr Wong has expertise in the diagnosis and management of anterior segment pathology, and performs corneal transplants (DMEK, DSAEK, DALK, PK, femto-CAIRS), corneal cross-linking, ocular surface tumour excision and reconstruction, limbal stem cell transplantation, cataract and pterygium surgery. He also performs a full suite of refractive surgery options, including ICL, femto-LASIK, refractive lenticule extraction, and advanced surface ablation.
Dr Wong is passionate about advancing the field of ophthalmology through research. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science, The University of Western Australia, and has been a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on numerous clinical and pre-clinical studies, having secured competitive grant funding totalling more than $300 000. He has a particular interest in corneal endothelial disease, keratoconus and corneal infections. He also currently serves as a Section Editor (Anterior Segment) for the journal Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology (CEO).
