Data Science Research Platform

Overview

Data Science Research Platform

The Data Science Unit serves as a supporting platform to provide consultations across all the departments in SERI and SNEC. We assist in the planning and designing of studies, grant proposals, statistical analysis and manuscript reporting for any research theme. The team has worked on analyses on large-scale population-based studies in the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases (SEED) programme. They have also worked on clinical research projects and trials, genome-wide association studies, and other projects with various organisations, such as SNEC, DUKE-NUS Medical School, National University Health System, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National University of Singapore, Genome Institute of Singapore and Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology.

We have an established reputation for being a leading centre for biostatistical methodologies relevant to eye research. Our work involves extensive inter-institutional and often international collaboration, undertaking research in applied projects and in statistical methodology.

Services

Principal investigators, clinician scientists and research fellows from all research platforms and even outside of SERI are welcome to tap into the statistical expertise of the team. We provide the following services:

  • Study design and planning: Discussion with principal investigators, clinicians, scientists, and research fellows to understand their research aims and to assist in the planning and design of their research study. Consultations on sample size and power calculations for studies, as well as statistical analysis plans and statistical sections for grant application services are available from the statistical unit.

  • Statistical analysis and reporting: Post-study, primary and secondary analysis will be provided to investigate research aims. Statisticians will also collaborate in the writing of reports, abstracts and manuscripts, as well as assist in reviews. Further insights and sub-group analysis will also be investigated.

  • Statistical consulting: The statistical unit will also provide an avenue to discuss and resolve ad-hoc statistical questions or post-hoc analysis for researchers of all research themes.

  • Statistics workshop: Introductory biostatistics sessions (workshops) on specific topics will be made available upon request from researchers who would like to learn and perform their own analysis with statistical programs.
