FELLOWSHIP IN VITREO-RETINA MEDICINE AND SURGERY

OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES

To produce mature, experienced, and knowledgeable vitreo-retinal surgeons with advanced level competency in the diagnosis and management of patients with retinal and vitreous diseases.

DURATION

One (1) year

STRUCTURE/CONTENT

  • Clinical teaching which includes patient care, examination, investigation, treatment, and discussion
  • Involvement in case presentations, clinical conferences, and journal clubs
  • Participation in grand rounds and daily ward reviews
  • Participation in teaching of residents and/or medical students
  • Participation in ongoing clinical research and quality assurance audit programmes of the Division
  • Exposure to a broad variety of retinal and vitreous disorders. This experience should include macular diseases, retinal vascular disease, oncology, degenerative hereditary disease and infectious retinal disease
  • The principles of fluorescein angiography, including supervised independent interpretation of angiograms
  • Hands-on experience with FFA as well as ICG Angiography with state-of-the-art equipment
  • Performance of electrophysiology testing, CT scan & MRI interpretations
  • Training in both vitreous and retinal surgery

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • MMed (Ophthalmology), FRCS or its equivalent and would have completed two (2) years of advance training rotations in general ophthalmology
  • Must be experienced in most aspects of clinical ophthalmology
  • Should have participated actively in teaching, research with an acceptable record of publication
  • Good command of English

FELLOWSHIP IN CORNEA & REFRACTIVE SURGERY

OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES

The fellow would be competent in basic corneal transplantation techniques and other forms of corneal and anterior segment surgery, as well as excimer laser photorefractive and phototherapeutic keratectomy.

OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES

The fellow should be able to attain competency in surgical and laser management of glaucoma patients.

DURATION

One (1) year

STRUCTURE/CONTENT

  • Clinical aspects - management and treatment of:
    • Primary open angle glaucoma
    • Acute angle closure glaucoma
    • Chronic angle closure glaucoma
    • Secondary glaucoma
    • Visual field analysis
    • Optic discs analysis, stereo photography and nerve fibre analysis
    • Ultrasound biomicroscopic examination of the anterior segment
  • Potential research project opportunities

OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES

To produce competent and responsible specialists in diagnosing and managing patients with oculoplastic diseases or disorders.

DURATION

One (1) year

STRUCTURE/CONTENT

  • History clerking
  • Examination, diagnosis, investigations and treatment of patients
  • Daily ward rounds and grand rounds
  • Teaching of residents/medical students/nursing staff
  • Management of oculoplastic emergencies
  • Presentation of papers and publications
  • Participation in quality assurance audit programmes for the service
  • Participation in ongoing clinical research
  • Exposure to wide range of oculoplastic disease
  • Training in interpretation of common orbital imaging studies such as x-rays, CT scan, MRI, angiography and hands-on participation in DCG and ultrasonography of the orbit
  • Training in oculoplastic surgery

FELLOWSHIP IN PAEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY AND ADULT STRABISMUS

OBJECTIVES

To produce a competent specialist in the diagnosis and management of patients of this discipline.

DURATION

One (1) year

  • See and manage patients under supervision
  • First assist and later perform surgery under supervision
  • Review patients before and after each operation
  • The fellow will screen for ROP in the neonatal nurseries and taught to diagnose and treat the condition
  • Research/papers publications

NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES

To attain proficiency in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of neuro-ophthalmic disorders as well as to participate in clinical neuro-ophthalmic research projects

DURATION

One (1) year

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

1. NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY CLINICS
There are currently nine (9) neuro-ophthalmology clinic sessions running per week, of which the neuro-ophthalmology fellow will attend at least seven. The fellow will be closely supervised, and will be responsible for clerking, examining and formulating a management plan for patients, and presenting these to the supervisor. Diagnostic and management approach to each condition will be taught. The fellow will also assist in updating the clinic neuro-ophthalmology patient database.

2. PROCEDURES
The fellow will learn the technique of injecting botulinum toxin for facial spasms, and will have the opportunity of administering this treatment under supervision.

3. WARD REVIEWS
The fellow will review all neuro-ophthalmology inpatients daily and will present such patients at the centre’s weekly grand ward rounds. He/she will also attend initially to any requests for neuro-ophthalmic evaluation of inpatients from non-ophthalmic wards within the hospital.

4. TEACHING AND EDUCATION
The fellow will be expected to present at the monthly neuro-ophthalmology and neuro-orbital radiology rounds as well as at all neuro-ophthalmology mini-symposia during the centre’s regular CME sessions. He / she will also be required to participate in the teaching of residents and / or medical students.

5. RESEARCH
The fellow is strongly encouraged to participate in clinical research for which a minimum of one research session will be made available. There will be opportunity for presenting research findings at local as well as international ophthalmology/neuro-ophthalmology meetings.

SUBJECT AREAS

  • Understanding the need to obtain a thorough and pertinent clinical history, and acquiring the ability to do so
  • Demonstration of clinical signs and understanding their significance
  • Systematic approach to the diagnosis of simple and complex neuro-ophthalmic condition
  • Details and rationale of therapy for various neuro-ophthalmic conditions
  • Correct ordering and interpretation of CT and MRI scans
  • Correct ordering and interpretation of relevant electrophysiologic tests as aids in diagnosis and management

DOCUMENTATION AND VERIFICATION

All non-clinical activities such as case presentations at in-house meetings, presentations at conferences and publications during the fellowship term should be recorded. The fellow will be assessed and a report given by the Service Head and the supervisor-in-charge
