At a conference on Friday, 11 Nov 2005, participated by Chinese eye doctors from Shanghai and joined remotely by Indian eye doctors from Aravind Eyecare System via tele-ophthalmology link-up, the Singapore National Eye Centre will conduct live demonstration of four eye operations including Asia’s first successful laser-assisted Corneal Graft surgery using the latest femtosecond laser technology.
Combining computer and communications technologies, tele-ophthalmology will enhance access and collaboration between Singapore and overseas centers of excellence. Aravind Eye Systems, situated in Madurai , Tamilnadu , India is the largest eye care network in India handling over 1.5 million patient visits and 220,00 major operations and laser procedures in 2004. It is renowned for its innovation model that has spurred rapid development and growth in eye care services in India . SNEC will commemorate the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Aravind Eye Care System to collaborate in clinical service, teaching and research.
The laser-assisted corneal graft surgery will be performed using 2 nd Generation Femtosecond laser. This is a solid state laser for minimally invasive intrastromal surgery which has excellent dissection quality, doing without a mechanical blade with no damage to adjacent tissue. The surgery is believed to be the first successful corneal graft in Asia using solid state laser technology to cut both patient and donor cornea.
