CLINICAL SERVICES - CORNEAL & EXTERNAL EYE DISEASE

OUR CLINICAL SERVICES : WHAT WE DO

The cornea is the transparent, lens-shaped tissue which covers the front surface of the eye. A clear healthy cornea is very important for good vision. It is akin to a clear window through which we look through, and for light to enter our eyes. It serves as a powerful refracting surface and provides about two-thirds of the eye's focusing power.

The SNEC Corneal Service provides medical diagnoses and treatment on the whole spectrum of disorders including various forms of keratitis (corneal infection or inflammation), corneal trauma and specific cornea and anterior segment disorders such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, pterygium etc.

The Service provides very comprehensive and advanced Corneal Transplantation services. The transplantation techniques and selective options available for various conditions as appropriate include Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK), as well as, Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK), Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK), Automated Lamellar Therapeutic Keratoplasty (ALTK) and Descemets Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK (otherwise known as Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK)).

Our Service is at the forefront of clinical and technological innovations, application and research in the field of corneal transplantation and has gained international recognition in its transplantation program. With new clinical programs in SNEC for the more advanced and emerging forms of corneal transplantation, and with our strong corneal research program in the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), Singapore has now become a leading international centre for corneal transplantation development. We are supported by and work closely with the Singapore Eye Bank (SEB) in our transplantation program, and the SEB is recognized as one of the top eye banks in the region with regards to high quality standards.

Various advanced forms of Ocular Surface Transplantation such as Limbal Stem Cell Transplantation and Artificial Cornea “Tooth in Eye Surgery” (Osteo-Odonto-Kerato-Prosthesis or OOKP) are also provided by our Service to deal with problematic and difficult ocular surface problems such as limbal stem cell deficiencies, ocular surface problems caused by conditions such as severe chemical injuries and Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

The Medical Contact Lens Service and Dry Eye Clinic are part of our Corneal Service and which provide specialised services to serve our patients with the respective needs.
