Scholarship For Degree Programme In Orthoptics

This scholarship offers high calibre ‘A’ Level Science students the chance to pursue a degree programme in Orthoptics in Australia. The successful candidate will enroll with the 3 ½-year Bachelor of Orthoptic and Ophthalmic Sciences programme at the La Trobe University, Melbourne or the 4-year Bachelor of Health Sciences / Master of Clinical Vision Sciences programme at the University of Sydney.

Upon successful completion of your studies, you will enter a challenging and rewarding career in SNEC as an Orthoptist. An Orthoptist is a healthcare professional who is involved in ocular motility assessment, diagnosis and management in both children and adults. You will work closely with our Paediatric Ophthalmologists, General Ophthalmologists and Allied Healthcare professionals and handle a wide range of challenging tasks such as:

  • Assessment of vision in children
  • Assessment and management of squint (strabismus)
  • Diagnosis and treatment of lazy eyes
  • Implementation of vision therapy
  • Participation in research projects

Entry Requirements

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • GCE ‘A’ level qualification, majoring in Science with good GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’
  • level results and good CCA performance
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Good patient-relation skills and ability to communicate well with children of different age groups

Conditions of Award

The award is subject to the candidate gaining admission to the programme at either the La Trobe University (February 2009 intake) or University of Sydney (March 2009 intake). The candidate should not be currently serving any other bond. On successful completion of the programme, the candidate will be required to sign a bond with SNEC.
