DMEK Minimally Invasive Corneal Transplantation Technique Performed at Singapore National Eye Centre
DMEK is a complex technique of minimally-invasive, sutureless, keyhole surgery known as Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK). Instead of implanting a 10th mm thick donor, this new procedure now just replaces the actual damaged corneal endothelial cells which are on a membrane just 1/100th mm thick. The major advance over current DSAEK (Descemets Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) is that patients now have the possibility of attaining 100% vision within a few weeks of surgery, i.e 6/6 vision, unlike DSAEK in which patients may often attain only 90-95% perfect vision.

The NEBSL is expected to get about 1,000 corneas each year from deceased patients, and these corneas can be used by patients in Sri Lanka as well as Singapore and other countries in Asia. |
