Singapore
National Eye Centre (SNEC) was incorporated in 1989 and commenced
operations in 1990. It is the designated centre within the public
sector healthcare network to spearhead and co-ordinate the provision
of specialised ophthalmological services with emphasis on quality
education and research.
Since its opening in 1990, SNEC has achieved
rapid growth and currently manages an annual workload of 14,000
major eye surgeries and 13,000 laser procedures.
Nine subspecialties in Cataract and Comprehensive
Ophthalmology, Cornea, Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Oculoplastic
and Aesthetic Eyeplastic, Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus,
Refractive Surgery, Ocular Inflammation and Immunology Service and
Vitro-Retina have been established to provide a full range of eye
treatment from comprehensive to tertiary levels for the entire spectrum
of eye conditions.
SNEC is actively involved in clinical trials
and research into the causes and treatment of major eye conditions
such as myopia and glaucoma. Thousands of ophthalmologists from
neighbouring countries and beyond have participated in the Centre's
teaching courses and international meetings organised annually.
To advance ophthalmic science and service, and to increase opportunities
for professional interactions and collaboration, SNEC has also fostered
strategic links with leading eye institutions around the world.
To meet increasing demand for clinical service,
teaching, research and international ophthalmic activities, SNEC
has undergone expansion with its Phase 2 extension at a total cost
of $50 million funded by the Government.
The new extension wing consists of a 8-storey
building totaling 14,850 sq m encompassing 2 floors of outpatient
clinics supported by comprehensive ancillary facilities, 5 new operating
theatres with expanded day recovery suites, an auditorium and new
resource centre, 2 floors to house the Singapore Eye Research Institute's
research clinics and basic research laboratories as well as space
for administrative offices.
The new Phase 2 wing will more than double
the Centre's operating capacity and will further enhance SNEC's
capabilities to deliver cost effective quality eye care to meet
increasing demand and to expand its role in ophthalmic education
and research. |
